User:JSaxe/Draft Main page

From makernexuswiki

This is my personal draft of a potential new Main page. Please don't mess with it, and especially don't delete it without my permission. If you have suggestions, please put them in the talk page (User talk:JSaxe/Draft Main page). Be aware that as I write this paragraph (February 11, 2025), the draft below is only slightly revised from a draft I saved in February, 2022. I'm well aware there is much that is out-of-date and/or incomplete. I particularly welcome comments re which info should be on the Main page or just one click away vs. which we'd be happy to have two or more links away and not cluttering the Main page. For one-click-away topics, how should they be named and organized so that readers can quickly find the correct link? For two-or-more-clicks-away items, will readers be able to quickly and accurately identify a link that will take them a step closer? ... --JSaxe

Where would people find out about the #openorclosed Slack channel? --JSaxe

Membership

Equipment

Are there other topics we'll want to add under "Equipment"? Where does the injection molder fit? the vacuum former? the jewelry bench and tools? whatever we expect might be going on in a "mud room" (silk screening?)? What else? --JSaxe

Classes

I think all we need here is a single link to our (TBW) main page about classes. The heading above could be that link. (But might some people be confused because they won't think that something that looks like a heading is clickable?) --JSaxe

Policies

  • COVID Protocols Should this be more prominently placed? --JSaxe [Added 2025/02/11: Maybe not. --JSaxe]
  • Safety
Our current information about safety (even in the narrow sense of avoiding injury, death, or property damage on account of improper use of tools or improper handling of materials, and not including things like anti-harassment, child protection policies, and COVID protocols, which are also safety concerns) is currently scattered in several places, some of which are marked as "DRAFT":

It makes sense for safety information about specific sectors and tools to be on the respective sector and tool pages, but I think our general safety information could be better organized. --JSaxe

The Ethics and Conduct page is currently marked as "DRAFT" though linked from other pages. --JSaxe~

The page Acceptable Use and Security Policy page is currently effectively orphaned. Is the content accurate? Is there a better version somewhere else? --JSaxe

  • ... What else goes here? Stuff about guests? kids? pets? class cancellation? (not) repairing your engine in in the parking lot? alcohol? firearms? For policies that aren't linked from the Main Page, what will be the obvious link to take people with questions one step closer to an answer? --JSaxe

Collaboration tools

  • Amilia (for memberships, class registrations, tool reservations)
  • ActivityHero (for youth class registration)
  • RFID system (for building access) [Is this now part of Amilia? --JSaxe]
  • ...
I think this section should have a link for at least every system that we expect typical members to use (including Slack, this Wiki, Google Drive, the event calendar on the website, and whatever else I've forgotten). There might or might not be links for less widely used things such as Trello or tools used only by MN staff. Links would go to text about the tool, what we use it for, how to get credentials, and perhaps tips about how to use the tool if it's not obvious. That text could be on a stand-alone page or as part of a larger page. --JSaxe

Organization

Miscellany =

Below are some topics, including various current wiki pages with MN-related content, that I haven't fit into the categories above. I don't intend this "Miscellaneous" category as a dumping ground for those topics, but as a reminder for us to decide what to do about them. Some won't deserve to be linked directly from the Main Page at all. Others might deserve very prominent placement. --JSaxe
Note that Maker Store and MN Retail are not to be confused with each other. --JSaxe
The following pages are currently orphaned (or effectively orphaned). --JSaxe

About Makerspaces and Making in General

Other items bulleted under "Maker Spaces and Resources" on the current main page ("Businesses offering discounts", "Ideas for Classes", and "A secure RFID system" could go a click farther away, either on the "Starting a Maker Space" page or on some new page. --JSaxe
  • Tools and Tips — This is our collection of notes for makers on tools, techniques, materials, settings, and sources. Articles linked from here may or may not be relevant to equipment or activities at Maker Nexus.
The words "Tools and Tips" would link to a new page with the links that are under that heading on the current Main Page. --JSaxe

About This Wiki

We need some text here, probably including references to Makernexuswiki:Copyrights, Shrimpware Wiki (if still relevant), Sandbox page, Other Stuff, Makernexuswiki:Terms of Service as well as encouragement to contribute and info about how to ask for credentials. We might want to create some how to information about basic wiki editing and about any conventions we'd like to follow in this wiki. --JSaxe
