Bernette b35 Sewing Machine
Description
The bernette 35 is a mechanical sewing machine with no computerized controls. The width, length and pattern of the stitch is easily set by turning the three knobs. The tension can be adjusted during sewing, using an easily accessible wheel. The bernette 35 also has an automatic, 1-step buttonhole function, which is quick and easy to use.
Maker Nexus has acquired six of these beginner-level machines, so that having like machines will make it easier to teach classes and project days. (Of course, participants are still welcome to bring their own familiar machines if they prefer.)

Safety Specifics
For any sewing machine:
- Keep your eye on the needle while sewing.
- Keep your fingers away from all moving parts. Do not touch handwheel, thread takeup levers, needles etc.
- Do not let anything obstruct the moving parts: foot pedals, levers, needles, etc.
- Use care when pushing or pulling fabric when sewing so you do not deflect the needle and cause it to break. Broken needles fly unpredictably and may travel long distances.
- Remove pins before the machine sews over them. They blunt or dull the needle and can causing timing problems.
- Make sure the needle isn't moving, is at it's highest point, and the take-up lever is up before you remove fabric to avoid needle deflection.
- Avoid loose clothing or long sleeves that might get caught in the work.
- If a needle becomes bent or breaks, report it.
- Turn off the power switch when:
- Operation is complete
- Replacing or removing the needle or presser foot
- Leaving the machine unattended
- Turn off the power switch and unplug the cord for these situations:
- Power failure during use
- Servicing the machine
Documentation

Tutorial videos from manufacturer. These videos have no narration, but closed captioning is available in several languages.
- b35 + b33 Tutorial – Bobbing winding and threading (1/7)
- b35 Tutorial – Selecting and sewing stitches (2/7)
- b35 Tutorial – Sewing buttonholes (3/7)
- b35 + b33 Tutorial – Sewing on buttons (6/7)
- b35 Tutorial – Sewing rolled hems (7/7)
(Nos. 4 and 5 in the series are versions of nos. 3 and 2, but for the b33.)
The following narrated video (from Pins and Needles sewing store in Mt Kisco, NY) covers threading and stitch selection with more detail on some points than videos 1/7 and 2/7 above, plus getting into the bobbin area for lubrication or to clear thread jams. Since the machine shown is a b33, it doesn't cover the b35's stitch width selector or the +/- adjustments on the stitch length "S" setting.

Tips & Tricks
The bobbin loading system is somewhat nonstandard. Follow the tutorials, user manual, or your teacher's advice. If you start out on the b35 and move up to some other machine, be prepared to learn a new routine.
Reviews report that buttonholes come out slightly larger than needed.
