Overview

This introduction to the world of industrial design through woodworking will enable both new and experienced woodworkers alike to develop modern woodworking skills, safely in our community woodshop.

Students will get hands-on experience using a mini-lathe to turn a wooden pen, a planer in the finishing process of making a laminated edge grain cutting board, a bandsaw, and drill press to build an analog clock, and a combination of those tools to make a wooden toolbox.

In the process of building multiple projects, we'll learn modern wood preparation including measuring, jointer, planer, drum sander, routing, lathe, cutting, glue techniques, sanding, and the finishing process in this action-packed weekly camp.

Safety is our top priority, so closed-toed shoes and a mask are required. In the woodshop we use safety glasses that Maker Nexus can provide and are sanitized after each use, however, we recommend each student bring their own pair.

Itinerary

  • General woodshop safety
  • Turn a pen using the wood lathe
  • Analog clock using drill press & bandsaw

Registration

Maker Nexus uses ActivityHero for our class registrations.

If we have upcoming offerings of this class scheduled, the link above will take you to an ActivityHero page where you can register for the next offering or ask to be put on a waiting list if that class is full. If we have more than one upcoming offering scheduled, the page will include a "Show More Dates" link.

If we have no upcoming offerings of the class currently scheduled, the ActivityHero page will include a "Request a Session" link. If you are a Maker Nexus member, you can also ask us to schedule classes by posting to the appropriate Slack channel (in this case, #young-makers (?)) if upcoming offerings are unavailable or don't fit your schedule.
